GreenPowerMonitor implements Hardware in the Loop simulation methodology to enhance its renewable power plant control design capabilities

  • Thanks to the recent deployment of a Hardware in the loop simulator, GreenPowerMonitor, a DNV company, is now capable of connecting its hardware controllers to simulated environments which faithfully represent any renewable power plant. GPM is able to benchmark its Power Plant Controller with anin-house generated models in PSSE, PSCAD, Digsilent Power Factory.
  • Work is already underway with this simulator to obtain the Germany, Poland and Spanish NTS 2.1 certificate for  GPM’s Power Plant Controller. 

 

GreenPowerMonitor (GPM), a DNV company, the data-driven digital solution provider for renewable energy plants, has recently acquired and deployed a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation toolbox that will significantly improve the development of its Power Plant Controller (PPC), hybrid control solutions and custom logics for clients.

HIL simulation methodology verifies that certified components are fit for purpose in the system for which they are intended. The greater the level of detail that can be achieved in the simulation, the better the result. This previously required that a specific model for each software had to be used to replicate the behaviour of our PPC.

By developing this simulation capability, experts from the Grid Integration Department of GPM are now capable of connecting controllers to simulation environments that can represent any renewable power plant with unprecedented accuracy, thus improving plant control solutions. This cutting-edge simulation capability is mainly used in aerospace and automotive research facilities, but not widely adopted in the development of power plant controllers in the energy industry.

This recent upgrade will boost GPM’s capability to deploy robust control solutions for renewable power plants.

In addition, we will be able to benchmark our real PPC with our in-house generated models in PSSE, PSCAD and Digsilent Power Factory, thus increasing reliability and precision of our PPC models.

GPM’s PPC with this HIL simulator has obtained the NTS 2.1 certificate in Germany and Poland, Germany and is on its way to getting certified in Spain.
